Chapter 2: Overview
2. Overview
2.1 Introduction
The Extended Range DVI-D Extender extends your PC DVI transmission distance
up to 330 ft. (100 m) at up to 1920 x 1200 or 1080p resolution. With the
extender, users can transmit high quality digital video from PC applications over
one inexpensive CAT5e/6/7 LAN cable to a remote monitor or projector, instead
of using short and expensive DVI cables. You can disconnect the monitor, place
it in a remote location, and reconnect it without rebooting the operating sys-
tem. The XR DVI Extender also supports serial port RS-232 (TXD and RXD)
control.
The extender includes two compact units: a transmitter and a receiver. The
transmitter unit connects to your PC DVI output and serial port, such as COM1,
and the receiver unit connects to a monitor with serial control (such as touch
panels). While successfully connected, the two LED lights on the RJ-45 connec-
tor will blink.
2.2 Features
• Complies with DVI 1.0 standard.
• Supports EDID and HDCP bypass.
• Extends the transmission length from the sources up to 330 ft. (100 m) at
1920 x 1200 or 1080p resolutions.
• Features auto equalization.
• Supports HDTV resolutions and VESA standards.
• Supports serial port RS-232 (TXD and RXD) control.
• Direct plug-in at TX and wall-mounting with screws at RX.
2.3 What’s Included
Your package should contain the following items. If anything is missing or
damaged, contact Black Box Technical Support at 724-746-5500 or

Chapter 4: Cable
4. Cable
1. The transmission length is largely affected by the type of LAN cables, the type
of HDMI sources, and the type of HDMI display. The testing result shows solid
LAN cables (usually bulk cable (100 ft. [300 m]) can transmit a lot longer sig-
nals than stranded LAN cables (usually in patch cord form). Shielded STP
cables are better suited than unshielded UTP cables. For long extension users,
choose solid core LAN cables.
2. We recommend using EIA/TIA-568-B termination (T568B) for LAN cables for
better performance.
3. To reduce the interference among the unshielded twisted pairs of wires in
LAN cable, you can use shielded LAN cables to improve EMI problems, which
are worse in long transmissions.

Appendix: Troubleshooting
Appendix. Troubleshooting
A.1 Contacting Black Box
If you determine that your extender is malfunctioning, do not attempt to alter or
repair the unit. It contains no user-serviceable parts. Contact Black Box Technical
Support at 724-746-5500 or [email protected].
Before you do, make a record of the history of the problem. We will be able to
provide more efficient and accurate assistance if you have a complete
description, including:
• the nature and duration of the problem.
• when the problem occurs.
• the components involved in the problem.
• any particular application that, when used, appears to create the problem or
make it worse.
A.2 Shipping and Packaging
If you need to transport or ship your extender:
• Package it carefully. We recommend that you use the original container.
• If you are returning the unit, make sure you include everything you received
with it. Before you ship for return or repair, contact Black Box to get a Return
